Abstract
The cargo handling management in the port sector post private participation in India
has witnessed a phenomenal in the import and export trade. The government policy of
operating ports under PPP (Public Private Partnership) mode has paved way for the
emergence of more number of warehouses in the ports hinterland. The researcher in this
project wishes to study about the impact of off dock CFS in container handling with
special reference to Chennai port.
CFS will assume a greater part in future their part in serving to decongest port quick
conveyance of holder, load and different administrations among shippers and exporters
with the east Africa is a representation of the basic part they can play in the freight
dealing with chain. A compartment cargo station (CFS) is an augmentation of the port
accordingly normally needs to work under traditions control and other government
organizations. It must have the base payload taking care of and storerooms. A CFS works
similarly as an Inland Container Depot (ICD) just that the last is as a rule found further
inland. Their fundamental capacities incorporate receipt and dispatch of payload,
stacking and off stacking of gathering load from compartments, arrangement of travel
operation among others. The matter of compartment cargo station is ending up extremely
productive and request in mombasa port because of increment of exchange and
dispatching among east Africa nations and exchange and development of merchandise
inside east African turn into an exceptionally bustling transportation and kenya's
neighboring landlocked nations utilize the port for government, private interest and
NGO's exercises.
The prominence of holder cargo station in Africa is been helped by the business patterns
worldwide and an acknowledgment by government and private part of the immense
advantages accuring from such compartment cargo station. Some of these incorporate

care of an alternate gathering of
exchanges. This specialization depends
on distribute (i.e. the measure of the
individual committal of freight) and the
load. Physical qualities the business can
be isolated into three wide portions, each
of which handles a particular
arrangement of cargoes.
Mass SHIPPING: handles extensive load
distributes "mass bearers" and oil
tankers intended for the productive
transport of the huge bundles (10 to
450,000 tons) of homogeneous cargoes,
for example, press mineral, coal, grain,
oil and so on.
Particular SHIPPING: transports vast
amounts of "specific" exchanges (e.g.
chemicals, gas, engine vehicles,
woodland items), for the most part
utilizing ships worked for the reason. In
spite of the fact that these boats are
reason assembled, they are regularly
intended to permit the carriage of
different cargoes. Particular cargoes are
regularly subject to rivalry from both the
liner and mass delivery sections.
LINER: has some expertise in the
vehicle of little load packages, which
don't fill the hold of a ship, on general
administrations. Today most liner load is
conveyed in containerships, yet some are
still transported in multi-reason vessels
or Ro-Ro's.
Delivery: represents considerable
authority in the vehicle of little payload
packages, which don't fill the hold of a
ship, on general administrations. Today
most liner payload is conveyed in
containerships, however some are still
transported in multi-reason vessels or
Ro-Ro's.
COMPANY PROFILE
Chennai Port, the third most established
port among the 12 noteworthy ports, is a
rising center port in the East Coast of
India. This passage port for all load has
completed128 years of transcendent
support of the country's oceanic
tradeport organization with the world
going behind ocean exchange the all the
more particularly with holder exchange
and parcel of port terminal work
compartment operations, it is the related
to consider the recommend on the ways
and mean the port productive in Chennai
port. Consequently the need of the
examination has increment enhance
operation of taking care of the
compartments in CFS with appropriate
methodologies.
Sea exchange began route in 1639 on the
ocean shore Chennai. It was an open
street - stead and uncovered sandy drift
till 1815. The underlying wharfs were
manufactured in1861, however the
tempests of 1868 and 1872 made them
out of commission. So a manufactured
harbor was fabricated and the operations
were begun in 1881.The payload
operations were done on the northern
dock, situated on the northeastern side of
Fort St. George in Chennai. In the
principal couple of years the port
enrolled activity of 3lakh tons of freight
dealing with 600 boats.
Being a fake harbor, the port was
defenseless against the typhoons,
gradual addition of sand inside the bowl
because of submerged streams, which
lessened the draft.
Sir Francis Spring a visionary skillfully
drew a long haul intend to contract the
course of the port in a logical way,
defeating both man-made and
characteristic difficulties. The moving of
the passage of the port from eastern side
toward the North Eastern side secured
the port to a vast degree from the
characteristic vulnerabilities. Before the
finish of 1920 the port was furnished
with a dock comprising of four billets in
the West Quays, one each in the East
and South Quay alongside the travel

marshaling yard to encourage the
exchange of load from land to ocean and
the other way around. Extra billets were
included with a compartment at South
Quay and another between WQ2 and

NEED OF THE STUDY
The port of container terminal
performance efficient can be determined
by the effectiveness of container yard.
Hence the port indications of the various
port administration with the world going
behind sea trade the more specifically
with container trade and lot of port
terminal operate container operations, it
is the pertinent to study the suggest on
the ways and mean the port efficient in
Chennai port. Hence the need of the
study has increase improve operation of
handling the containers in CFS with
proper strategies.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Since the private participation by the
terminal operators from the millennium
the volume of cargo handled in port
increase drastically. Hence much
difficulty was experienced by the ports
in the customs investigation of cargo,
loading and unloading operation in the
disposal and aggregation of cargo etc.,
consequent do this the customs
authorized the warehouses to carry out
the above said activity in fact this
warehouses were bonded by the customs
regulation that could change time and
time.
The major problems faced by container
freight station are as follows
The company is suffering with
lack of infrastructure like
equipment, IT system.
Delay in LCL consolidation to
take more time because of
shipper falsify document.
Delay in customs official to
inspect the cargo because of
new amendment in duty.
The local connectivity between
port and CFS was not
maintained properly.
These are the major problems faced by
the company in its business efficiency.
The study throws light on the above
problems faced by off dock CFS in
Chennai port.

Study that Export-Import Operations
are the actions and decisions necessary
to take a product or Raw material from
a source in one country to a market in
another. This article will discuss export- import operations as a three part
process: pre-shipment, transport, and
after-sale. Each of the three will be
considered in turn from the perspective
of business professionals attempting to
expand their companies' interests across
national boundaries. Export-import can
be considerably more complex than
doing business in a single, domestic
market, but the realities of a globalizing
economy are such that most companies
and most people must increasingly deal
across frontiers whether they wish to or
not.
Dr.MaonnRuluta,
The study sought to investigate the
factors hindering the success of the
container freight stations in facilitating
imports and exports. A descriptive
survey design was used on container
freight stations. The researcher used
purposive sampling to select firms for
the study. Questionnaires and interview
guides were used as data collection
instruments. The study found out that;
demurrage charges through delays, loss
