Use of internet Resources in Academic Libraries in Modern Era

Abstract
The Internet has rapidly become one of the most powerful global sources of a wide range of
information presenting many possibilities for librarians and information providers. Today internet is
undoubtedly, the world wonder network, earrying information on almost every subject. It is very
important to learn how to retrieve information from internet without wasting time. The present
paper interoduecs the use of internet resources in academic libraries in modern era and also outline
the role of internet resource on research.

Introduction
The global network of networks is called as “Internet”. The internet can be defined as a network of
networks which at one level is a vast collection of small and large interconnected computer
networks. Abernathy defined internet as a “network of all kinds of computers that use myriad
operating system. Packets of data travel from system to system along the internet, until they reach
their destination . internets designers needed a lingua franca, the system could understand so the
packets could go where they supposed to go even if some links in the net were down”.
Internet is the most revolutionary development in the field of information science in these days . in
sixties when it is started it works as a simple communication tool for defense personnel . But in
modern time there are moving pictures , graphics are also available in internet.
Internet resources
Internet resources can be defined as a resources which is present on internet in the electronic form.
In other word , the resources located remotely and can be accessed through interactive
communication with the help of computer and communication channel. A internet resources is an
unit of information often called a document that is available over the world wide web.
Internet resources are created using HTML , which defines the contents of a webpage such as
images, text, hypertext links, video and audio file etc. Internet resources are sent and received
through HTTP, a method used to transfer hypertext files across the internet . Information contained
in the internet resources are provided in the form of hypermedia pages, which combines graphics

and text and also have the added feature that users can follow the links provided to other
documents located virtually anywhere on the internet.
Basic features of internet Resources
Internet resources are interactive in nature.
Generally internet resources are created using HTML.
Internet resources possess wider accessibility.
Internet resources are accessed and browsed using HTTP protocol and files are exchanged using FTP.
Internet resources can reduce cost in case of library.
Use in academic library
In modern time internet Resources are the important sources of diversified information. Through
internet modern library provide different up to date information to the user. Without internet and
internet resources it is literally impossible to cater all the information needs of the library user
especially in academic library so, academic library internet and internet resources is very much
useful in academic library internet resources are mainly used in the following section.
Library service
Internet and internet resources are widely used in providing online services. These services are
mainly SDI, CAS bibliographic services etc., online database search service is another important
service which is cost effective through internet. So, many library offer online database which can be
accessed through internet .
Collection development
To update library collection internet resources are the best one. Online book, web opac different
type of e-journals are very much popular in internet. Through internet one can e-mail facility for
communicating with publishers and book sellers on the internet.
Information compilation
Internet and internet resources are one of the vital sources for compiling specialized information
such as country profiles , current affairs etc . As information are in the electronic forms , so it is very
much easy for the library professionals to manipulate , reuse and repackage it.

In academic library use of internet resources can help in developing knowledge and ideas of the user
academic library. It also helps in exchange of information among the libraries. Through internet one
can participate in discussion forums and networking.
Role of internet resource on research
In any research the major part is gathering information from various sources. In this context internet
resources played very important role. It helps researcher in his research in different ways. In
research process internet resource helps the researcher in topic selection , searching for authentic
information citing sources, notes taking evaluating sourced. Today information is published in
electronic form in internet which is very much important for research scholar.
. By the help of internet resource researcher can able to find the authentic information which is very
much important for his research.
. Through the internet resource in internet we can able to visualize and compare our views on a
topic with views of others around the world.
. Researching for a topic on the internet can be lively and interactive with the various types of
sources like discussion forum, newsgroups which enables us to discuss an issue with other people
interested in that particular topic.
Conclusion
The internet provides enormous information on a variety of subjects where libraries, in general, can
explore and benefit from these resource . so, internet resource can be regard as one of the
important part of academic libraries we can say that in academic library a mainly university library
internet resource is one the important part who help the professional to develop its service.
